Mendel's Wisdom of Furnace Safety

At Mendel, we're often asked why a homeowner should have their heating and air conditioning system cleaned and checked annually. Our strongest and best answer simply boils down to 1 thing: Safety.

MENDEL Plumbing & Heating Technicians are trained to conduct numerous safety checks during our furnace service calls. One of the most important is heat exchanger integrity. The critical safety concern with regard to gas furnace heat exchanger cracks and/or holes is the potential, accidental venting of carbon monoxide into the home.

So, what is arguably the LARGEST DANGER of an aging Furnace and the reason to have your system checked annually?

The Potential of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

How can a homeowner prevent CO poisoning in their home, according to The US Center for Disease Control?

  • #1: Install a battery-operated or battery back-up CO detector in your home
  • #2: Have your heating system, water heater, and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.

Your family's safety is our main concern! Our trained technicians conduct numerous safety checks during our furnace service calls to verify there are no cracks and/or holes in your furnace's heat exchanger.

We schedule MendelCare VIP appointments to focus on your air conditioner between March and August, and your furnace between August and February. To protect your family, we also complete a 20-point safety check at every home during these visits.

In between your annually scheduled maintenance appointments, it is important to check your filter every month, especially during winter and summer months. Change your filter if it's dirty - or at least every three months. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, dirt and neglect are the top causes of heating and cooling system inefficiency which can lead to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.
